Ever since last New Year’s Day I’ve been totally fascinated & in love with The Mummers. Super straight South Philly men dressed up as flamboyant, drunk, mascots for a whole day is something everyone should witness once in their life. Of course being a Mummer is more than just one crazy day out of the year, it’s 365 days of hard work & tradition.
This past Friday I got the chance to catch “The New Year Parade“. The film focuses around the McMonagal’s and their family’s struggle to stay together. You watch as children, Kat and Jack, go through their own personal battles as they try & maintain relationships of their own. Their father, Mike, is captain of the South Philly String Band and diverts his attention from his family’s mess by focusing on being number one at the New Years Day Mummers Parade.
This is a great story about love, family, & the Mummer traditions of Philadelphia. For one week only this film festival jewel is playing at the Ritz Bourse. Get your tickets here.
UPDATE: The Ritz has extended it’s screening of the movie for an extra week. No excuses, go see this movie!
